Answer engine optimization explained for business owners
Answer engine optimization is the work of making your business the source that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews quote when someone asks a question you can answer. Most people shorten it to AEO. The engine reads many pages, picks a few, and writes one answer with a handful of citations. You get the visit or the recommendation only if you are among the pages it picked.
Why the clicks are moving
Ahrefs, studying 300,000 keywords, found the first Google result loses about 58% of its clicks when an AI Overview appears. SparkToro and Similarweb put the share of US Google searches that end without a click at 68%.
The visits that do arrive from AI tools are still a small slice, and they convert well. First Page Sage reports that AI-referred visits were 4.73% of US retail site visits in Q3 2026, up from 0.43% in Q4 2024, and that they converted about 1.6x other traffic. Adobe measured 42% better conversion for AI traffic to US retailers in Q1 2026. Locus found that 45% of US online shoppers use an AI tool somewhere in the purchase journey (Q2 2026).
How answer engine optimization differs from SEO
Classic SEO aims at a ranking position. AEO, which some people call AI search optimization, aims at a citation inside a written answer.
| Question | Classic SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| What you win | A ranking and a click | A mention or link inside an answer |
| What gets judged | The whole page and its links | One passage that answers the question, and the business behind it |
| Outside signal | Backlinks | Third-party mentions of your brand |
On that last row, Ahrefs looked at 75,000 brands and found a 0.66 correlation between third-party brand mentions and visibility in Google's AI answers. Backlinks came in at 0.22. Review sites, directories, trade publications and comparison articles that name you accurately matter more than another guest post with a link.
Ranking still helps. Ahrefs (March 2026) found 38% of AI Overview citations come from the top 10 results. Another 31% come from positions 11 to 100. A page outside the top 10 can be cited if it answers the question more directly than the pages above it.
How the engines pick sources
Each engine looks for a passage it can lift with little editing. A page that opens with the answer, then gives the price, who it suits and where it stops applying, is easy to lift. A page that opens with a brand story is not.
Your business name, offers, prices and locations should read the same on your site and everywhere else they appear.
For local businesses the data sources differ by engine. Gemini grounds local answers on Google Maps. ChatGPT and Perplexity draw on Bing Places and Yelp. The SOCi Local Visibility Index 2026 found ChatGPT recommends 1.2% of multi-location businesses, Gemini 11% and Perplexity 7.4%.
Structured data correlates only weakly with AI citations. Keep it, because it matters for rich results and feed consistency, but do not expect schema alone to earn a mention. Stores have a firmer checklist. OpenAI's product feed spec has 9 required fields, and a Shopify catalog needs a standard category, an image per variant, a price above zero and full policies.
What to do this week
- Write the ten questions a buyer asks before choosing a business like yours. Run each in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and record who gets cited and which page they cite.
- For each question, choose the one page on your site that should answer it. Rewrite the first two sentences to state the answer, with the price or range if you have one.
- Open your Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Yelp listings. Make name, address, hours and services match your site word for word.
- List the five outside sites where your category gets discussed. Ask for a correction or a listing where you are missing or described wrongly.
- If you sell products, check your feed against the fields above. Fix missing categories, variant images and policies first.
- Add a visible updated date to your most important pages, and change anything that is out of date, such as prices, plans and locations.
Once you have the ten questions, you have the start of a panel you can re-test every month. Our audit uses the same idea with 25 buyer prompts.
A worked example
JCS Fashions, a 4,878-product Shopify apparel store in Milpitas, California, was LynkAI's first customer. In 2026 its Google clicks went from 205 a month in January to 626 in September. Clicks to its guide pages went from 0 in February to 231 in August. Sessions from AI assistants went from 20 in January to 569 in October.
We published about 290 quality-gated articles between April and September. By the end, 233 guide pages were earning impressions on 24,164 queries. Each of those pages answers one buyer question near the top. The full numbers are in the JCS Fashions story.
Answer engine optimization is slow work in the first month and compounds after that, because every page that answers a question well is one more candidate for a citation.
