Generative engine optimization vs SEO: what changes
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is SEO aimed at a new result: your business named inside an answer written by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews. Most of the technical groundwork carries over. The measurement, the source of authority and the page format change. If you already pay for SEO, none of that spend is wasted.
What stays the same
An AI engine can only cite what it can fetch and understand. Crawlable pages, clean internal links, fast load times, one topic per URL and accurate business details all still matter. Ranking helps too. Ahrefs reported in March 2026 that 38% of AI Overview citations come from the top 10 results and 31% from positions 11 to 100. Good SEO puts you in the pool the engines draw from.
If your site has indexing or duplicate-page problems, fix those first. Nothing built on top of them will be found. We cover why we still do that work, and why citations are the number we report against, on our classic SEO page.
Where generative engine optimization differs from SEO
| Question | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A click from a ranked result | A named mention or link inside an answer |
| What you track | Rankings and clicks | Citations for a fixed set of buyer prompts |
| Authority signal | Backlinks | Third-party mentions of your brand |
| Page format | Built around a keyword | Opens with a direct answer to one question |
| Local data source | Google Business Profile | Google Maps, Bing Places, Yelp |
Start with measurement. Ahrefs found that the first Google result loses about 58% of its clicks when an AI Overview appears (300,000 keywords). SparkToro and Similarweb put the share of US Google searches that end without a click at 68%. A rank report tells you less every quarter. A better check is whether you are named when a buyer asks ChatGPT who to hire or what to buy. Pick a fixed list of those questions and rerun it on a schedule, so a change in the answers means something.
Authority is the second change. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, third-party brand mentions correlated 0.66 with AI Overview visibility, against 0.22 for backlinks. Other sites saying you exist, in reviews, directories, trade publications and comparison posts, carries more weight than who links to you. That makes a review profile or a trade directory listing worth real effort, even when it sends you no traffic.
Local is the third. Gemini grounds local answers on Google Maps, while ChatGPT and Perplexity use Bing Places and Yelp, so a Google Business Profile alone covers one engine of three. The SOCi Local Visibility Index 2026 found ChatGPT recommends 1.2% of multi-location businesses, Gemini 11% and Perplexity 7.4%. An error in one source will not show up in the others, so check each listing on its own.
The page format changes as well. To optimize for ChatGPT and its peers, open each page with the answer in the first two sentences, then give the detail. State prices, locations, plan terms and specs in plain text a model can quote.
What to skip
Many AI search optimization checklists start with an llms.txt file. Google discourages the file, and AI crawlers rarely request it. Skip it and spend that time on the steps below. Structured data is a similar case. It correlates only weakly with AI citations, though it still matters for rich results and feed consistency, so keep it accurate and stop expecting it to earn mentions.
A worked example
JCS Fashions, LynkAI's first customer, is a 4,878-product Shopify apparel store in Milpitas, California. Between January and September 2026 its Google clicks went from 205 a month to 626, and guide-page clicks went from 0 in February to 231 in August. Sessions from AI assistants went from 20 in January to 569 in October. The date ranges differ between those figures, so treat them as a rough trend. The work behind both was the same: about 290 quality-gated articles published between April and September. The numbers are on the JCS Fashions customer page.
Five steps for this week
- Write 25 questions a buyer would ask before choosing you. Run each in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and note which businesses get named and which sources get cited. Save the answers in a spreadsheet so you can rerun the same list next month.
- Make your name, address, hours and category identical across Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Yelp.
- Rewrite the opening of your five busiest pages so the first two sentences answer the page's question. Leave the rest of each page as it is for now.
- List the third-party pages that name your competitors, such as review sites, directories and comparison posts, and pick three to get onto.
- If you sell products, check your feed. OpenAI's product feed spec has 9 required fields, and Shopify's catalog needs a standard category, an image per variant, a price above zero and full policies.
Step one is the baseline for any generative engine optimization work, because it shows which prompts you already win and which you lose. If you would like that picture without running the prompts yourself, the free AI visibility scan shows where ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity place your business today.
